Counseling Psychology

The Counseling Psychology Program trains scientist-practitioners to contribute to psychology's knowledge base and adapt their attendant clinical work for the prevention and remediation of human problems and for the development of human potential.

The orientation is preventive and developmental insofar as it focuses on individual strengths as well as normative transitions and issues that occur throughout the lifespan. A primary focus throughout the curriculum is multicultural applications of counseling psychology.

Students can expect training in the following areas:

  • Counseling with individuals, groups and families.
  • Ethical issues.
  • Foundations of counseling psychology.
  • Assessment.
  • Research.

Program graduates go on to participate in a variety of work-related activities that include:

  • Doctoral study.
  • Assessment work in hospital settings.
  • Crisis management.
  • Organizational behavior.
