The Graduate Program in Adult and Continuing Education prepares professional adult and continuing educators to work in a wide variety of settings such as higher education, business and industry, health and social service agencies. Graduates are primarily concerned with facilitating adult learning and planning and managing educational or training programs for adults. The program is flexible and cross-disciplinary to meet the diverse needs of its students. This is accomplished in part at the masters level by allowing 12 of 30 credits for free electives. There is similar flexibility at the doctoral level, where Adult Education is a formal concentration in Social and Philosophical Foundations. Another dimension is a balance in course work devoted to conceptual foundations, professional practice skills, and research. In Adult Education, two specialized research courses are offered each year, while the remaining courses are divided about equally between those emphasizing conceptual or foundational topics and those geared to developing or improving professional practice capabilities.
