The Social and Philosophical Foundations of Education graduate programs provide students with opportunities for advanced study and research in education from the intellectual perspectives of the social sciences (e.g., sociology, anthropology, and economics of education) and the humanities (e.g., history and philosophy of education). At the masters level, this is pursued through curriculum and degree requirements that emphasize a core of coursework in the disciplinary perspectives offered in the programs, which are complemented by collateral coursework in areas of individual professional and academic interest. At the doctoral level, students specialize in a disciplinary program emphasis or in a coherent combination of disciplines appropriate to their professional and academic concerns. Doctoral requirements emphasize preparation in a range of research methodologies appropriate for independent inquiry.
