Admissions Guidelines

All applicants for the Ph.D. in Education program must submit the following materials: 
  • Undergraduate and graduate transcripts if the applicant has done graduate work. Originals of these documents are required. If you are interested in the Mathematics Education concentration of the Ph.D. program, your previous coursework should show the equivalent of a strong undergraduate major in mathematics, and preferably some graduate level work in mathematics.
  • At least three letters of recommendation from individuals able to evaluate your potential for advanced graduate work and research.
  • A personal statement expressing your interest in graduate study. You should indicate which area of concentration in the Ph.D. in Education program is of particular interest to you. Your personal statement needs to include an explanation of how your interests fit those of the particular area of concentration.
  • Graduate Record Exam scores that are no more than five years old.
  • Individuals for whom English is a second language must submit TOEFL scores. A minimum computerized test score of 213 is expected for admission to a graduate program.

Admission to the Ph.D. program is based on a review of each completed application by the program faculty and the Ph.D. director.

All applications are processed through the Office of Graduate and Professional Admissions, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, 18 Bishop Place, New Brunswick, NJ, 08901-8530, (732) 932-7711 or http://gradstudy.rutgers.edu/Completed applications are forwarded to the specific program. Applying and paying the application fee online is the preferred method for submitting an application to Rutgers for immediate processing.

A complete application consists of:

  • Application form
  • Application fee
  • Official transcripts
  • Personal statement
  • 3 letters of recommendation
  • Test scores

Applications should be filed with the Office of Graduate and Professional Admissions as early as possible to meet the deadlines listed in the application materials. The deadline for receipt of completed applications is February 1 for a Fall admission.
