Frequently Asked Questions for Degree Programs

What is the difference between the EdM MA in Literacy and the Reading Specialist program?

The MA in literacy gives the student Master’s degree but does not give them a certification. It is designed for K-12 teachers who wish to extend their knowledge about literacy teaching and learning but do not wish to add a certification as a reading specialist. The Reading Specialist MA is a 36 credit program that gives students a master’s degree and certifies them to work as reading specialists. The programs are designed quite differently. Because the Reading Specialist program leads to a certification, students must take a prescribed set of courses. A student must have two years of successful teaching to apply for the program. The MA in literacy is a 30 credit program. The program is designed to allow students to pursue special areas of interest.
