Frequently Asked Questions for Degree Programs

How do I become a School Counselor (used to be referred to as a Guidance Counselor)?

Certification as a school counselor is issued by the state. Eligibility for New Jersey certification as a school counselor requires a 48-credit master’s degree from an approved program in school counseling. School counselors work in school settings assisting elementary, middle, and high school students with academic, career, personal, and social development.

The Graduate School of Education offers a program to become a School Counselor. It is a 48-credit Ed.M. in Counseling Psychology leading to the NJ School Counselor Educational Services Certification. The program can be found here.
