Degree Requirements
Major:
Every candidate for certification in Biological Sciences or Agricultural Sciences Education must complete a full major in a biological science (e.g., agricultural science, animal science, biology, plant science, etc.).
General Education:
Certain State of New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) and Graduate School of Education (GSE) Five-Year Teacher Certification "general education" requirements overlap with Cook College's requirements for graduation, while some GSE requirements exceed those of NJDOE and Cook College. However, with careful planning and selection of courses to meet "area" and "major" course requirements, the majority of the NJDOE and GSE requirements will be fulfilled.
- Arts (Area III: 3 of the 6 credits must be in music or art, e.g., music appreciation or art appreciation)1
- Humanities (also Area III: 3 of the 6 credits may come from linguistics, religion, literature, philosophy or classics)1
- Mathematics (the 3 or 4 credit pre-calculus, calculus, or statistics requirement in your major meets this requirement)
- Science (life, earth and space, physical, or environmental)
- Technology (computer science or a technology-based course in a discipline; note that this course fulfills the college's computer competency requirement)
- Foreign Language (two semesters or demonstrated competence, by way of advance placement test, equal to the second semester; note that two semesters - 6 credits - of language may be used to meet the foreign Area IV requirement)
- Psychology (6 credits as follows)

- 01:830:333 Adolescent Psychology (note that this course counts as an unspecified elective)
Liberal Arts:
The total number of credits in coursework in Liberal Arts, including the major, must be at least 90. Neither Education courses, nor any other vocationally-oriented coursework (accounting, engineering, etc.) may be counted toward the 90 liberal arts credits; no School 05 or School 15 courses may be included.

- The undergraduate credit portion of this program is a minor (non-license) with foundational courses for students interested in science education, environmental/outdoor education, agricultural and/or extension education. The minor serves as the gateway to the RU-GSE Five Year Teacher Education Program master's degree leading to teacher certification in New Jersey.

Portfolio:
Students must compile a portfolio of their best work to be submitted and evaluated at the end of the program. The contents of this portfolio are specified in the Student Policy and Procedures Handbook. (This requirement applies to students admitted March 2007 and after.)
Physiology, Hygiene, and Substance Abuse Issues:
During the Internship semester, students must either attend a series of seminars addressing issues of human physiology, hygiene, and substance abuse or must pass the official New Jersey Department of Education examination on these topics.
Praxis II:
Students seeking certification in the biological sciences must achieve passing scores on the Biology: Content Knowledge (Test Code 20235), General Science: Content Knowledge (Test Code 10435).Students seeking certification in the agricultural sciences are not required to take a Praxis exam. Students should take these tests upon completion of the academic discipline courses while the knowledge is fresh.
Comprehensive Examination:
No comprehensive examination is required.
