Degree Requirements
General Education:
- General Education: Prior to beginning or completing the program, students must have taken, at either the graduate or undergraduate level, coursework in these six areas:
- Arts (music theory, art history or appreciation, theater appreciation, or dance appreciation)
- Humanities (languages, linguistics, religion, literature, philosophy, classics, history)
- Mathematics (math, statistics)
- Science (life, earth and space, physical, or environmental)
- Technology (computer science or a technology-based course in a discipline)
- Social Science (psychology, sociology, anthropology, economics, political science, history)
- History and Social Science Requirements:
- Every candidate for certification in Social Studies Education must have completed a full major in one of the following: history, political science, economics, sociology, geography, anthropology, American studies, or area/gender/ethnic studies such as Africana studies, women's studies, Puerto Rican studies, etc. (Please note: Art History is not an acceptable major.)
- When a student's major is in one of the five core content areas: world history, US history, political science, economics, geography then the student will need one course in each of those areas that they did not major in.
- When a student's major is sociology, anthropology, American studies or area/gender/ethnic studies such as Africana studies, women's studies, Puerto Rican studies, etc. then the student must complete 301 credits across the five content areas including at least one three credit course in each.
- Students who do not have an appropriate social studies major must complete 301 credits in one of the core content areas. Twelve of those 30 credits must be at the 300 level or higher.
- All students who did not major in history must have completed at least 15 credits in world/US history.

Liberal Arts:
The total number of credits in coursework in Liberal Arts, including the major, must be at least 90. Neither Education courses, nor any other vocationally-oriented coursework (accounting, engineering, etc.) may be counted toward the 90 liberal arts credits.

- GThis course has an undergraduate number. Be sure to register for it for graduate (G) credit.
- EElectives must be in Social Studies Education or Core Content areas and should be used to fulfill general education or core requirements. In order to count for graduate credit, they must be at least at the 300 or 400 level. All elective selections must be approved by an advisor.
- #Course must be 300-level or above to count towards graduate credits. 300- and 400-level courses must be registered for with a G-prefix.
- *This course has a required field experience component.
- **One semester of supervised full-time teaching in the classroom of a cooperating teacher. This course is offered only in the fall semesters.
- ***Elective courses can be taken in any semester EXCEPT when taking 15:255:535.
- Any coursework that needs to be taken in order to meet the general education or liberal arts requirements (listed above) will add to the 45 credits specified here.
- Courses listed in the Suggested Sequence of Courses for First Fall, First Spring, and Summer may be taken on a part-time basis and do not have to be taken in the exact order listed, although that order is recommended. However, all courses scheduled for those three semesters must be completed prior to the Teaching Internship semester. The courses listed for Second Spring may be taken only after the Internship.

Portfolio:
Students must compile a portfolio of their best work to be submitted and evaluated at the end of the program. The contents of this portfolio are specified in the Student Policy and Procedures Handbook. (This requirement applies to students admitted March 2007 and after.)
Physiology, Hygiene, and Substance Abuse Issues:
During the Internship semester, students must either attend a series of seminars addressing issues of human physiology, hygiene, and substance abuse or must pass the official New Jersey Department of Education examination on these topics.
Praxis II:
Students seeking certification in social studies must achieve a passing score on the Social Studies: Content Knowledge (Code 10081) Praxis II examination.
