The Ed.M. program in language education is designed to extend and diversify the professional preparation of certified teachers who seek to enhance their instructional skills and knowledge in one of three specializations—bilingual/bicultural education, English as a second language education, and foreign language education. The program also serves the needs of individuals who work in settings that do not require certification and are interested in a scholarly exploration of aspects of language education. The goal of the program is to provide students with a thorough understanding of the nature of language, the process of second language acquisition, the relationship between language and culture, and successful models of second language instructional strategies. (Note: If certification is needed, see the description sheets for the Ed.M./Certification Program in ESL or the Ed.M/Certification Program in Language
