The joint master's degree/certification program in Mathematics Education is designed for individuals who possess a baccalaureate degree in mathematics or some other technical field from an accredited institution of higher education and who wish to pursue certification and a master's degree in education at the same time. Certificates are recommended only in conjunction with the completion of the requirements for the Ed.M. degree.
The program has three major goals:
- To acquaint students with the historical development of mathematics education and a variety of perspectives on current issues;
- To acquaint students with the psychology of learning mathematics, and how individual differences among children with respect to academic ability, and social, economic, and cultural backgrounds may influence learning; and
- To expand the mathematics background of students, to acquaint them with a variety of methods for teaching mathematics, and to provide them with practical experiences in creating effective classroom environments for children learning mathematics.
