Dr. Strickland (Ph.D., NYU) is the Samuel DeWitt Proctor Professor of Education. She was formerly the Arthur I. Gates Professor of Education at Teachers College, ColumbiaUniversity and the State of NJ Professor of Reading. A former classroom teacher and learning disabilities specialist, she has authored and edited numerous publications concerning language development and reading. She received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from both Kean College of New Jersey and New YorkUniversity. Dr. Strickland is a frequent visiting professor and lecturer and serves on numerous boards and committees involved in educational activities. In 1994 she was the recipient of the National Council of Teachers of English Rewey Bell Inglis Award as Outstanding Woman in English Education. She is past president of both the International Reading Association and of its Reading Hall of Fame. The National Council of Teachers of English honored Dr. Strickland with the 1998 Outstanding educator in the English Language Arts Award. She served on the national panels that produced Preventing Reading Difficulties and the RAND report, Reading for Understanding.
