The program requires 48 course credits:
- 18 credits in social studies education courses
- 9 credits in foundations of education
- 9 credits in research methods
- 12 credits of electives with advisor approval.
In addition, 24 research (dissertation) credits are required. Up to 18 of the course credits can be transferred from an accredited institution. Each individual’s program is determined in consultation with his or her academic advisor. Toward the completion of the course credits, students take a qualifying exam, both written and oral.
The major distinction between the M.Ed. and the Ed.D. is the dissertation. Students should decide on a research interest as early as possible so they can focus their course credits toward that interest. Students submit a dissertation proposal to a 3-member faculty committee explaining the topic to be investigated, its significance, previous research on the topic, and the intended research procedures. Students defend their completed dissertations before the same committee that approved their proposals.
