Kids in South Africa get Darkroom, October, 2006
October  29, 2006

MyStory Workshops Kids in South Africa Get Darkroom October 4, 2006. In August of 2006, My Story traveled to Paarl, South Africa to build a darkroom for the kids at Amstelhof Primary School, one the most socially and economically disadvantaged schools on the Western Cape. With the help of Hope Peavy and Jessica Tompkins from the Greater Brunswick Charter School, Amstelhof Primary School now has a fully functioning darkroom with 4 enlargers and 40 cameras. We trained three of Amstelhof teachers, Estelle, Rossi, and Des to run the darkroom, and facilitated a workshop in which all 30 of Amstelhof’s teachers were given an opportunity to take pictures and develop their own film. We also spent two days working with a wonderful group of 7th graders. Many of these kids had never taken pictures before. This project would not have been possible without help from the Greater Brunswick Charter School, Rutgers Graduate School of Education’s South Africa Initiative, 57 Main Street Imports, and all of the wonderful teachers at Amstelhof Primary School. We owe a special debt of gratitude to our host-families, and to Principal Claude de Jager for all work he put into coordinating this project and in preparing the perfect darkroom. Thank you, Claude! Amstelhof Primary School is now the first Primary School on the Western Cape to have its own photographic darkroom. We can’t wait
