A New Jersey Network Classroom Close-up production based on the classroomSoweto documentary screencap curriculum project of Muneerah Higgs, a Fulbright Fellow and GSE South Africa Initiative (SAI) participant in 2004, was recently nominated for a Mid-Atlantic Emmy Award in the Education/Schools Program Feature or Segment category.

Muneerah a teacher at Lawnside Elementary School,  developed a series of classroom lessons around the history and experience of Soweto, a South African township that was the site of some of the most significant protests against apartheid education.

Her lessons included skits, dances, talk shows, debates, writing prompts, protest marches and other innovative pedagogical approaches. (A clip of this video is available in Windows Media Video format.)
